What it's like

Beacon Hill rises behind the gold-domed Massachusetts State House, with narrow brick streets of Federal-style row houses, gas lamps and window boxes. Acorn Street is one of the most photographed streets in the US, and Charles Street at the foot of the hill has antique shops, cafés and restaurants.

It's a romantic, quiet base next to Boston Common and the Freedom Trail. There are only a couple of hotels, they're expensive, and the hills and cobbles are hard work with luggage.
