What it's like

Okazaki was laid out for the 1895 exhibition, and it's now Kyoto's museum quarter, with the National Museum of Modern Art, the Kyocera Museum of Art and Heian Shrine's giant torii. Nanzen-ji's temples and aqueduct are at the foot of the hills, and the Philosopher's Path runs north to Ginkaku-ji.

It's a peaceful base for culture and walks, with Gion 15 minutes away on foot. It's quiet at night, with fewer restaurants, and hotels are mostly upmarket.
