Walking minutes follow the OpenStreetMap street and footpath network at an easy pace of about 5 km/h, from the hotel entrance to the Haram's gates or the mosque's doors. They do not include lifts, security checks or prayer-time crowds. Typical prices from Booking.com for December 2026, not live rates. Ramadan and the last ten nights cost much more. Booking through our links costs you nothing extra and may earn us a commission. Learn more · © OpenStreetMap contributors
The areas, closest first
Walking minutes are from the hotels we list in each area. Prices are for a double room outside Ramadan.
Clock Tower (Abraj Al Bait)
2–3 min walk · $400–$690 a night
The towers facing King Abdulaziz Gate. You come down through the mall and the Haram is in front of you. The catch is the lifts: at prayer times getting down from a high floor can take longer than the walk.
Older pilgrims, short stays, praying every salah in the Haram
Jabal Omar
3–9 min walk · $225–$445 a night
Newer towers on the hill west of the Haram, closest to King Fahd Gate. Big international brands for less than the Clock Tower. The way there is downhill, so the way back is uphill.
Families, couples, good hotels for less
Ajyad
5–11 min walk · $110–$325 a night
The streets south-east of the Clock Tower along Ajyad Street. Older mid-range hotels 5 to 11 minutes from King Abdulaziz Gate: the best value you can still walk from.
Mid-range budgets who want to walk
Umm Al Qura Road and Jarwal
11–23 min walk · $40–$95 a night
Budget hotels on the west side, 10 to 25 minutes from the Umrah Gate and King Abdullah Gate. Simple rooms, some with a free shuttle.
Tight budgets, groups
Misfalah
24 min walk · From $80 a night
South along Ibrahim Al Khalil Street, with local restaurants and lower prices. It is around 25 minutes on foot, so most people take a taxi or the bus at night.
Longer stays on a budget
Kudai
28–30 min walk · $65–$110 a night
About 2 km south, half an hour on foot. Most hotels here run a free shuttle to the Haram, and you get a good four-star room for the price of a basic one near the gates.
Value, if you don't mind the shuttle
Before you book: check your visa
Umrah visa: since June 2025 the hotel has to be booked through Nusuk Masar, on the Nusuk platform or through an approved agent. A Booking.com reservation cannot be used to get this visa.
Tourist eVisa, GCC residents and people living in Saudi Arabia: you can stay in any licensed hotel and book it wherever you like, including through the links on this page. You still need a free Umrah permit in the Nusuk app.
The rules change often. Check nusuk.sa before you pay.
Questions
Which hotels are closest to the Haram?
On our walking times: Makkah Clock Royal Tower, A Fairmont Hotel (2 min), Raffles Makkah Palace (2 min), Swissotel Makkah (2 min).
Which gate should I use?
King Abdulaziz Gate faces the Clock Tower, King Fahd Gate serves Jabal Omar and King Abdullah Gate leads into the northern expansion. Use the gate nearest your hotel every time, so you always come out where you went in.
Is it worth staying further out?
It saves a lot: rooms in Umm Al Qura Road and Jarwal start around $40 a night against about $400 in Clock Tower (Abraj Al Bait). The cost is time: 20 to 30 minutes each way, five times a day, or a wait for the shuttle.
How accurate are the walking times?
They follow the mapped streets and footpaths at an easy pace and stop at the gate. Add time for lifts in tower hotels, crowds before prayer, and a slower pace with elderly parents or children.
