What it's like

Castlefield is where Manchester began: a Roman fort, then the world's first industrial canal. Today its basins, iron bridges and viaducts make it the most photogenic part of the city, with canal-side pubs, the Science and Industry Museum and the Castlefield Viaduct garden.

It's quieter than the centre but 10 minutes' walk from St Peter's Square, with Deansgate station for trains to the airport.
