What it's like

The Mission is the city's oldest neighbourhood, named after Mission Dolores, and often its sunniest. Balmy and Clarion alleys are covered in murals, 24th Street keeps its Latino bakeries and shops, and Valencia Street has bars, bookshops and restaurants. Dolores Park fills with picnickers on warm days.

It's the best base for food and nightlife, with BART straight to the airport. Hotels are few, and parts of Mission Street feel rough at night, so stay near Valencia or Dolores Park if you can.
