What it's like

Pioneer Square is where Seattle began, rebuilt in brick after the Great Fire of 1889. Its red-brick buildings hold art galleries, bookshops and bars, the Underground Tour explores the buried old streets, and the Smith Tower has a 1914 observation deck. Lumen Field and T-Mobile Park, home of the Seahawks, Sounders and Mariners, are just south, and the International District is next door.

It's a characterful base for sports fans and history lovers, with light rail to the airport. Homelessness is very visible, and the streets can feel unsafe late at night.
