What it's like

Foggy Bottom is home to George Washington University, the State Department and the Kennedy Center on the river, with the Lincoln Memorial and the western end of the Mall a short walk south. The West End, just north, has some of DC's most luxurious hotels and restaurants, and Georgetown is a 15-minute walk away.

It's a quiet, convenient base with the Blue, Orange and Silver lines and an easy walk to the monuments. Evenings are calm, with fewer bars and restaurants than Dupont or Penn Quarter.
