What it's like

De Pijp was a 19th-century workers' district and is now Amsterdam's most cosmopolitan neighbourhood. The Albert Cuyp Market fills its main street six days a week, and the side streets are packed with cafés, brunch spots and restaurants from every corner of the world. Sarphatipark is its small green heart.

It's a great base for food lovers and repeat visitors, with a real neighbourhood feel and slightly lower prices than the canals. The North-South metro reaches the centre in minutes, and the museums are a 15-minute walk away. There are fewer hotels than in the centre.
