What it's like

The Gold Coast runs north from the top of the Magnificent Mile, with leafy streets of 19th-century mansions and townhouses, Oak Street's designer shops, and Oak Street Beach right in the shadow of the skyscrapers. Rush Street and Division Street have restaurants, steakhouses and lively bars, and Lincoln Park is a short walk north.

It's a refined, safe-feeling base that combines city and beach. It's expensive, Division Street gets rowdy late at weekends, and it's a longer walk to the Loop.
