What it's like

Wicker Park and neighbouring Bucktown are where Chicago goes for independent shops, vintage clothing, record stores, coffee and late-night bars, centred on the six-way junction of North, Milwaukee and Damen avenues. The 606, an elevated rail trail, runs along the northern edge.

It's the best base for a local, creative feel, and the Blue Line runs to the Loop and O'Hare. Hotel choice is very limited, and it's 20 minutes or more from the main sights.
