What it's like

Venice was built as a seaside resort with canals in 1905, and a few of those canals survive behind the beach, lined with pretty houses and footbridges. The boardwalk is a carnival of street performers, skaters, Muscle Beach and the skate park, while Abbot Kinney Boulevard has some of LA's best boutiques and restaurants.

It's fun, creative and close to the airport, with a bike path to Santa Monica. Hotels are few, the boardwalk is scruffy with visible homelessness, and it's a long drive to Hollywood or Downtown.
