What it's like

Fitzroy is Melbourne's oldest suburb and its creative heart. Brunswick Street and Gertrude Street are lined with Victorian terraces housing vintage shops, galleries, pubs and restaurants, and Smith Street in Collingwood has more bars and live music. Street art covers the side lanes.

It's ideal if you want to live like a local, with trams to the CBD in 10 to 15 minutes and the Exhibition Building and Melbourne Museum nearby. Hotels are few, and weekend nights are lively.
