What it's like

Southbank faces the city across the Yarra. The promenade is lined with restaurants and bars, the National Gallery of Victoria and Arts Centre Melbourne sit at its eastern end, and the Eureka Tower's Skydeck and the Crown casino complex are a short walk along the river.

It's a polished, comfortable base with many of Melbourne's big hotels and great views back to the skyline. The CBD is a bridge away, and the Botanic Gardens are a short walk. It can feel more like a resort than a neighbourhood, especially around Crown.
