What it's like

Greenwich Village and the West Village are a maze of brownstones and crooked streets that break Manhattan's grid. Washington Square Park is the centre, with NYU, jazz clubs and comedy cellars around it.

The West Village is residential and pretty; the streets near the park and Bleecker Street are livelier at night. Hotels are few, so book early.
