What it's like

The Baixa is a grid of handsome 18th-century streets between Rossio and Praça do Comércio, with the triumphal Rua Augusta arch, the Santa Justa lift and cafés on every square. It's flat, which is rare in Lisbon, and sits between the hills of Chiado and Alfama, so most sights are a short walk or tram ride away.

It's the most convenient base for a first visit, with metro lines, trams and ferries close by. Rua Augusta is touristy and crowded, and some streets empty out at night.

Best streets and sub-areas
