What it's like

Chiado is the city's refined heart: grand cafés like A Brasileira, the world's oldest bookshop, theatres and stylish shops around Rua Garrett, with the ruined Carmo Convent above. Downhill, Cais do Sodré has gone from port district to nightlife hub, with the 'Pink Street' bars, the Time Out Market and the train to Cascais.

It's a lovely, central base between Baixa and Bairro Alto. The streets are steep, and Cais do Sodré is loud late at night.
