Where to stay in Lisbon

Lisbon is built on seven hills above the Tagus, and its central neighbourhoods are close together but steep. Stay in the Baixa for flat streets, grand squares and transport; in Chiado and Cais do Sodré for elegant cafés, shops and riverside nightlife; in Alfama for fado, viewpoints and the castle; in Bairro Alto and Príncipe Real for bars, boutiques and gardens; on the Avenida da Liberdade for luxury hotels and shopping; in Belém for monuments and calm; or by the sea in Cascais. Spring and autumn are ideal; summer is hot and busy, and winter is mild but rainy. Cobbles and hills make comfortable shoes essential.
