What it's like

Coconut Grove feels a world away from the high-rises: banyan-shaded streets, sailboats in Dinner Key's marinas, bayfront parks and a village centre around CocoWalk with shops, cafés and restaurants. Vizcaya Museum & Gardens is just north, and the Barnacle is the oldest house still on its original site in Miami-Dade.

It's a calm, family-friendly base with a Metrorail station for Downtown and the airport. There's no ocean beach, nightlife is low-key, and hotels are few and fairly pricey.
