What it's like

The Marais is the Paris many visitors picture: narrow streets, grand private mansions turned into museums, Place des Vosges, and a mix of old Jewish bakeries, concept stores and wine bars.

It's central and walkable, with Métro line 1 running along its southern edge. Weekends are busy and rooms are small for the price, but few areas put you closer to everything.

Best streets and sub-areas

  • Rue des Rosiers

Falafel, bakeries and boutiques in the old Jewish quarter.

  • Haut-Marais

Galleries, concept stores and the Enfants Rouges market around rue de Bretagne.

  • Place des Vosges

The quietest and most elegant corner.
