What it's like

Montmartre still feels like a village: stepped streets, a vineyard, small squares and the white domes of Sacré-Cœur on top. Around Abbesses it's full of cafés and bakeries; lower down, Pigalle has the city's best cocktail bars.

It's 20 minutes by Métro from the centre and the hill is steep, but prices are noticeably lower. The area right around Sacré-Cœur and Place du Tertre gets very crowded by day.

Best streets and sub-areas

  • Abbesses

The heart of the village: cafés, boutiques and the Métro.

  • Rue Lepic

Winding street with bakeries and the Moulin de la Galette.

  • Pigalle (SoPi)

Cocktail bars at the foot of the hill; livelier and edgier.

Bistro in one of the last windmills on the hill.
