What it's like

Monti sits between the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and Santa Maria Maggiore. Its sloping streets are full of vintage shops, wine bars and trattorias, and locals gather on the steps of the fountain in Piazza della Madonna dei Monti.

It has Metro stops (unusual for central Rome) and is walking distance from Termini for the airport train. The streets closer to Termini are scruffier, so check a hotel's exact location.

Best streets and sub-areas

  • Via Urbana & Via Panisperna

    Boutiques, wine bars and trattorias.

  • Piazza della Madonna dei Monti

Small square where locals gather in the evening.

  • Towards Termini (Esquilino)

Cheaper hotels in a scruffier area; choose carefully.
