What it's like

Trastevere is Rome's most photogenic neighbourhood: cobbled lanes, laundry lines, ivy and small piazzas full of tables. By night it's the city's liveliest area, with trattorias and bars busy until late.

It's a 15-minute walk across the river to the centre and there's no Metro, but tram 8 runs to Largo Argentina. The eastern side of Viale di Trastevere is calmer and more local.

Best streets and sub-areas

  • Piazza di Santa Maria

    The lively heart of Trastevere.

  • Via della Lungaretta & Via della Scala

Restaurants and bars, busy at night.

  • East of Viale di Trastevere

Quieter and more local, on the tram line.
