What it's like

Alanya is a real town with life all year. Seljuk walls climb the peninsula to the castle, the 13th-century Red Tower guards the harbour, and Cleopatra Beach, a long stretch of sand, runs right through town with a cable car up to the castle. Hotels range from small city hotels to large all-inclusives in Avsallar, Konaklı, Kestel and Mahmutlar along the coast.

It's the cheapest of the resort areas and the liveliest at night, with bars and clubs around the harbour. The catch is distance: it's two hours from Antalya Airport. Gazipaşa-Alanya Airport, about 40 minutes away, has fewer flights but saves the long transfer.
