The best things to do in Antalya

Antalya sits on cliffs above the Mediterranean, with the Taurus Mountains rising behind it. The walled old town of Kaleiçi wraps around the Roman harbour in the middle; the long pebble beach of Konyaaltı stretches west towards the mountains, and the sandy beaches and big hotels of Lara lie to the east. Along the coast in both directions are resort towns and some of the best-preserved ancient cities in Turkey: Kemer and Olympos to the south-west, Belek, Side and Alanya to the east.

Here are the 18 things we'd put on a first trip, grouped by part of the coast, with the area to stay in if that part of Antalya matters most to you. July and August are very hot, so see ruins early in the morning; May, June, September and October are the best months for sightseeing and swimming together.

Kaleiçi and the city centre

  1. 1.Kaleiçi old townFree

A maze of lanes inside the old city walls, lined with restored Ottoman houses, boutique hotels, courtyard cafés and bougainvillea.

Tip: Wander it in the early evening, when the day-trippers leave and the courtyard restaurants light up.

    Stay nearby: Kaleiçi · ~$100/night
  2. 2.Hadrian's GateFree

A triple-arched Roman gate built for the emperor Hadrian's visit in 130 AD, still the main way into the old town.

Tip: Look down at the ancient road surface under the arches, with ruts worn into the stone by cart wheels.

    Stay nearby: Kaleiçi · ~$100/night
  3. 3.The old harbour and a boat trip

The Roman harbour below the cliffs, now full of wooden gulets offering trips along the coast.

FAQs

Is Antalya city or the resorts better for a holiday?

Stay in Antalya itself (Kaleiçi or Konyaaltı) if you want restaurants, the old town and easy day trips. Choose Lara, Belek, Side or Kemer for an all-inclusive beach holiday where you rarely leave the hotel.

Does the Museum Pass cover the ruins near Antalya?

Yes. The Museum Pass Mediterranean (and the all-Turkey pass) covers Perge, Aspendos, Side, Phaselis, Olympos, Alanya Castle and the Antalya Museum, among others, and pays for itself after a few sites.

How do I get from Antalya Airport to the city?

The airport is about 15 km east of the centre. Taxis and transfers take around 20–30 minutes to Kaleiçi or Konyaaltı; the resorts of Belek, Side, Kemer and Alanya are 30 minutes to two hours away, so most hotels there arrange transfers.
