Why stay here

  • Hadrian's Gate, the harbour and the old lanes on your doorstep
  • Boutique hotels in restored Ottoman houses
  • Restaurants and bars inside the walls

Who should stay here

  • First-time visitors
  • Couples
  • Short city breaks

Not ideal if…

  • You want a sandy beach outside the door
  • You're travelling with a pushchair: the lanes are steep and cobbled
  • You want a big pool and resort facilities

What it's like

Kaleiçi means 'inside the castle'. Its lanes run downhill from Hadrian's Gate and the clock tower at Kalekapısı to the old harbour, where gulets leave for boat trips along the coast. Many of the old wooden houses are now small hotels, often with a courtyard pool.

It's the most atmospheric place to stay and the easiest for sightseeing. The lanes are steep and cobbled, rooms are small, and bars near the harbour stay loud late in summer. There's no sandy beach, only the small Mermerli beach under the walls.

Best streets and sub-areas

  • The old harbour

Fish restaurants, boat trips and the walls above.

  • Uzun Çarşı Sokak

Shops between the clock tower and the harbour.
