What it's like

Ubud sits inland among rice fields and river gorges. The town has the Royal Palace, the Saraswati water temple, the Sacred Monkey Forest and nightly Balinese dance shows, plus art markets, galleries, yoga studios and healthy cafés. Around it are the Tegallalang rice terraces and luxury resorts with infinity pools over the jungle.

It's the best base for culture, nature and wellness, and cooler than the coast. There's no beach, the town centre is congested, and it's 1–1.5 hours from the airport.
