Suvarnabhumi airport to central Bangkok: every option compared

Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is about 30 km east of central Bangkok and handles most long-haul flights. The Airport Rail Link avoids the traffic; a metered taxi is door to door.

Bangkok's traffic makes the train the safer bet at rush hour, while a taxi is often quicker late at night or to the Old Town. Below are journey times to each area we cover.

The options

  1. Airport Rail Link

From the basement of the terminal to Makkasan (for the MRT Blue Line) in about 20 minutes and Phaya Thai (for the BTS) in about 26, every 10 to 15 minutes.

Tip: Buy a token at the machine or counter. Change at Makkasan for Sukhumvit and Silom, or at Phaya Thai for Siam.

    Stay nearby: Sukhumvit · ~$100/night
  2. Metered taxi

From the public taxi stand on level 1, using the meter plus a fixed airport surcharge and expressway tolls. Allow 30 to 60 minutes, much longer at rush hour.

Tip: Take a queue ticket from the machine and make sure the meter is on; pay expressway tolls in cash as you go.

Stay nearby: Old Town & Khao San · ~$80/night
  3. Grab and Bolt

Ride-hailing apps pick up from marked points. Fixed prices up front, useful if you don't want to haggle or explain your address.

  4. Hotel or private transfer

Riverside hotels often offer cars or boat transfers; a pick-up saves the long taxi ride across town.

    Stay nearby: Riverside · ~$130/night

From Don Mueang

Don Mueang (DMK), north of the city, is the hub for low-cost airlines like AirAsia and Nok Air. The SRT Dark Red Line runs from the airport to Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, and A1 and A2 buses go to Mo Chit for the BTS and Victory Monument.

For Khao San Road, the A4 bus or a taxi is simplest. The times below are from Suvarnabhumi.
