What it's like

The Eixample is Barcelona's elegant grid of wide streets and modernista buildings, with Gaudí's Casa Batlló and Casa Milà on Passeig de Gràcia and the Sagrada Família in the east.

Hotels here are larger and quieter than in the old town, the Metro is excellent, and there's a huge choice of restaurants. It lacks the medieval charm of the Gothic Quarter, which is 10 minutes' walk away.

Best streets and sub-areas

  • Passeig de Gràcia

Grand avenue of Gaudí buildings and flagship shops.

  • Rambla de Catalunya

    Pedestrian boulevard with café terraces.

  • Sant Antoni

Western Eixample: markets, bars and better prices.
