Barcelona airport to the city centre: every option compared

Barcelona El Prat is about 15 km south-west of the centre and has two terminals, T1 and T2, linked by a free shuttle bus. Check which one your airline uses before you choose.

The Aerobús is the easiest way to most hotels, the train is cheapest from T2, and a taxi takes about half an hour. Below are journey times to each area we cover.

The options

  1. Aerobús

Express buses from both terminals to Plaça d'Espanya, Gran Via, Plaça Universitat and Plaça de Catalunya, every 5 to 10 minutes, in about 35 minutes. A1 serves T1 and A2 serves T2.

Tip: Pay by contactless card on board or at the stop. A return ticket is cheaper if you book it with your outward journey.

    Stay nearby: Eixample · ~$270/night
  2. R2 Nord train

Rodalies trains from T2 to Sants, Passeig de Gràcia and El Clot, every 30 minutes, about 25 minutes to Sants. From T1, take the free shuttle bus to T2 first.

Tip: A standard single or a T-casual travel card is valid, which makes it the cheapest option.

    Stay nearby: Eixample · ~$270/night
  3. Metro L9 Sud

Direct from both terminals to the edge of the city, where you change to lines L1, L3 or L5. Slow, around an hour to the centre.

Tip: The airport stations need a special airport ticket; the T-casual isn't valid there, but the Hola Barcelona travel card is.

    Stay nearby: Gràcia · ~$175/night
  4. Taxi

About 25 to 35 minutes to the centre on the meter, with a fixed airport supplement. Queue at the official rank outside arrivals.

  5. Night bus

The N16 and N17 night buses run between the airport and Plaça de Catalunya when the Aerobús and trains stop.

Before you go

Some low-cost flights to 'Barcelona' land at Girona or Reus, over an hour away by coach. The times below are from El Prat.

Pickpockets work the Aerobús and the Metro; keep bags in sight, especially at Plaça de Catalunya.
