What it's like

The Barri Gòtic is a maze of stone lanes, small squares and Roman ruins around the cathedral. You can walk to La Rambla, the port, El Born and Plaça de Catalunya in minutes.

It's also the busiest part of the city, with pickpockets working the crowds and noise late at night. Hotels on the quieter lanes behind the cathedral are the best choice.

Best streets and sub-areas

  • Around the cathedral

The historic core; quieter lanes behind it.

  • Plaça Reial & Carrer Ample

    Livelier, with bars and restaurants.

  • La Rambla

Central but crowded and touristy; pick a side street instead.
