Gràcia was a separate town until 1897 and still feels like one: low buildings, lively squares, independent shops, vermouth bars and a strong Catalan identity. Park Güell is at the top of the hill.

It's a 15-minute Metro ride from the old town and the beach, and hotels are fewer and smaller. In return you get lower prices and a real neighbourhood.
