What it's like

Mitte has most of the sights you came for: the Brandenburg Gate and Reichstag, the Holocaust Memorial, Unter den Linden, Gendarmenmarkt and the five museums of Museum Island beside the Spree. Around Hackescher Markt and Rosenthaler Straße, old courtyards hold galleries, boutiques and bars.

It's the most convenient base for a first visit, with every transport line passing through. Parts of it are busy and touristy, especially around Alexanderplatz and Friedrichstraße, and it's quieter at night than Kreuzberg or Friedrichshain.
