The best things to do in Berlin

Berlin is big and spread out. Most of the landmarks are in Mitte, the historic centre; the Berlin Wall sites, the parks and the nightlife are in the neighbourhoods around it, from Prenzlauer Berg in the north to Kreuzberg and Neukölln in the south. The U-Bahn and S-Bahn link them all.

Here are the 20 things we'd put on a first trip, grouped by part of the city, with the area to stay in if that part of Berlin matters most to you. Many of the history sites are free, but the Reichstag dome needs booking ahead.
