What it's like

Prenzlauer Berg was a run-down East Berlin district that became one of the city's most desirable. Its tree-lined streets of restored apartment blocks are full of cafés, brunch spots and independent shops, with Kollwitzplatz's market, the Kulturbrauerei and the old water tower at its heart.

It's calm, safe and very family-friendly, with trams straight into Mitte. On Sundays the Mauerpark flea market and open-air karaoke draw crowds. Nightlife is more about wine bars than clubs.
