What it's like

The old Jewish Quarter in Erzsébetváros is home to the Dohány Street Synagogue, Europe's largest, and a maze of streets now famous for ruin bars, set in abandoned buildings and courtyards. Szimpla Kert is the original, Gozsdu Udvar is packed with restaurants, and street art and food trucks fill the gaps.

It's the best base for nightlife, food and a young, creative atmosphere. It's noisy and crowded at weekends, with stag parties, so choose a room facing a courtyard.
