What it's like

Terézváros runs along Andrássy Avenue, the UNESCO-listed boulevard lined with mansions that leads from the centre to Heroes' Square and City Park, home of Széchenyi Baths. The State Opera, the 'Broadway' of theatres on Nagymező utca and cafés line its lower end, and Liszt Ferenc tér has restaurant terraces.

It's a good-value, well-connected base with the M1 metro, continental Europe's oldest underground, running beneath the avenue. It's busier near the Oktogon at night, and Nyugati station area can feel rough.
