What it's like

The Palotanegyed was where Hungary's aristocrats built their town palaces in the 1800s, around the Hungarian National Museum. Today it's a mix of faded grandeur and revival, with university buildings, design shops, cafés and bars along streets like Bródy Sándor utca and Krúdy utca.

It's a characterful, good-value base a short walk from the Belváros and the Jewish Quarter. It's less polished, quieter at night, and the outer edges of District VIII are best avoided after dark.

  • Bródy Sándor utca

Mansions, cafés and the old Radio building.

  • Krúdy utca
