What it's like

Lipótváros, the 'Leopold Town', is Budapest at its grandest: the neo-Gothic Parliament on the river, St Stephen's Basilica with its panoramic dome, Liberty Square's banks and embassies, and the Chain Bridge leading to Buda. The Shoes on the Danube memorial stands on the embankment, and Széchenyi tér's Gresham Palace faces the castle.

It's a polished, calmer base than the Belváros, with fine restaurants around the basilica. Hotels are upscale, and evenings are quieter than in the Jewish Quarter.
