Where to stay in Cancún

Cancún is two places: the Hotel Zone, a 22 km strip of sand between the Caribbean and a lagoon lined with all-inclusive resorts, and Downtown, the real city on the mainland. Stay in the northern Hotel Zone for calm water, nightlife and Punta Cancún; in the southern Hotel Zone for big waves, wide beaches and quieter resorts; Downtown for the cheapest rooms and local food; or in Costa Mujeres for new luxury all-inclusives north of the city. Or head down the coast to Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, or across to Isla Mujeres. December to April is dry and busiest; hurricane season runs June to November, and sargassum seaweed can hit the beaches in summer.
