What it's like

Downtown has been transformed around Discovery Green park, with the George R. Brown Convention Center, Daikin Park (the Astros' ballpark) and the Toyota Center (the Rockets) all within a few blocks. The Theater District has the opera, ballet and symphony, Buffalo Bayou's trails run along its western edge, and POST Houston's food hall and rooftop park fill an old post office.

It's the best base for conventions, games and shows, with the METRORail Red Line running south to the museums and the Medical Center. Outside events, many streets are quiet after office hours, and tunnels rather than streets connect much of the area.
