What it's like

The Museum District has the Museum of Fine Arts, the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Children's Museum and more, many free or cheap, set around the oak-lined streets near Hermann Park. The park has the Houston Zoo, a reflecting pool, a miniature train and the Japanese Garden. Just south, the Texas Medical Center is a city of its own, with dozens of hospitals and research institutes.

It's ideal for culture lovers, families and anyone visiting the Medical Center, and the METRORail runs straight to Downtown. Evenings are quiet, and there are fewer restaurants and bars than in nearby Montrose.
