What it's like

Galata climbs from the Golden Horn up to the medieval Galata Tower and on towards İstiklal Caddesi. Karaköy, at the bottom, was a run-down port district that is now full of coffee shops, restaurants and small design hotels, with Istanbul Modern on the waterfront.

It's the best all-round base: Sultanahmet is one tram stop over the Galata Bridge, İstiklal is a short funicular ride uphill, and ferries to Kadıköy leave from the pier. The streets are steep and many old buildings have no lift, so check before you book if you have heavy luggage.

Best streets and sub-areas

  • Galip Dede Caddesi

Music shops and cafés from the tower up to Tünel.

  • Kemankeş Caddesi

Karaköy's café and restaurant strip by the water.

  • Serdar-ı Ekrem Sokak

Quiet street of boutiques and old apartment buildings.
