The best things to do in Istanbul

Istanbul's big sights are packed into the old city peninsula around Sultanahmet. Across the Golden Horn are Galata, Karaköy and Taksim, and across the Bosphorus is the Asian side, a 20-minute ferry away.

Here are the 20 things we'd put on a first trip, grouped by part of the city, with the area to stay in if that part of Istanbul matters most to you. Mosques close to visitors during prayer times, so plan those visits around them.

Sultanahmet and the old city

  1. 1.Hagia Sophia

The 1,500-year-old church turned mosque, under one of the largest domes of the ancient world.

Tip: Since 2024, foreign visitors buy a ticket and see it from the upper gallery, with a separate entrance; the ground floor is for worshippers.

  2. 2.The Blue MosqueFree

Sultan Ahmed's mosque, with six minarets and more than 20,000 blue İznik tiles inside.

Tip: Entry is free. Cover shoulders and knees; women need a headscarf, which is lent at the door.

  3. 3.Topkapı Palace

The Ottoman sultans' palace for nearly 400 years, with courtyards, treasury, relics and the Harem.

  5. 5.The Grand Bazaar

  6. 6.The Spice Bazaar

The Egyptian Bazaar at Eminönü, with spices, Turkish delight and dried fruit.

Tip: Walk round the corner to the Rüstem Paşa Mosque, covered inside with İznik tiles and often almost empty.

  7. 7.Süleymaniye MosqueFree

Sinan's masterpiece on the third hill, with a garden terrace looking over the Golden Horn.

FAQs

Do tourists have to pay to enter Hagia Sophia?

Yes. Since January 2024, foreign visitors pay an entrance fee and visit the upper gallery through a separate entrance. Entry to pray on the ground floor remains free.

Which Istanbul sights are closed on which days?

Topkapı Palace is closed on Tuesdays, Dolmabahçe Palace on Mondays, and the Grand Bazaar on Sundays. Mosques are open daily but close to visitors during the five prayer times.

What's the cheapest way to see the Bosphorus?

Take a public ferry. The Şehir Hatları Bosphorus tour from Eminönü, or any commuter ferry between the European and Asian sides, costs a fraction of a private cruise.
