Istanbul Airport to the city centre: every option compared

Istanbul Airport (IST) is about 40 km north of the old city, so every option takes an hour or more. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), used by Pegasus and other low-cost airlines, is on the Asian side.

The M11 metro avoids the traffic, Havaist buses go straight to the main districts, and a taxi is easiest with luggage. Below are journey times from IST to each area we cover.

The options

  1. M11 metro

From the airport to Gayrettepe in about 35 minutes, where you change to the M2 for Taksim and Şişhane (Galata). For Sultanahmet, stay on the M2 to Vezneciler or change again to the T1 tram.

Tip: Pay with an Istanbulkart, sold at the machines in the station, and top it up for the rest of your trip.

    Stay nearby: Taksim & Cihangir · ~$110/night
  2. Havaist bus

Airport coaches from below the arrivals hall to Taksim, Sultanahmet, Beşiktaş, Kadıköy and other districts, around the clock on the main routes. 60 to 90 minutes depending on traffic.

Tip: Pay with an Istanbulkart or a contactless card. Check the route number for your district on the Havaist screens.

    Stay nearby: Sultanahmet · ~$120/night
  3. Taxi

Metered taxis in three classes (yellow, turquoise and black) wait outside arrivals. Allow 45 to 75 minutes; the meter includes the bridge and highway tolls.

Tip: Agree the destination before you set off and make sure the meter is running. BiTaksi works like Uber with licensed taxis.

  4. Private transfer

Many hotels arrange pick-ups at a fixed price, the simplest option for the narrow streets of Galata and Cihangir.

    Stay nearby: Galata & Karaköy · ~$150/night
