Who should stay here

What it's like

Sultanahmet is the old imperial centre of Byzantium and the Ottoman Empire, and most of Istanbul's famous sights stand around its squares and the Hippodrome. Small family-run hotels fill the lanes downhill towards the Sea of Marmara, many with roof terraces looking at the domes or out over the water.

It's the easiest base for a first visit: you can walk to the main sights before the tour groups arrive and the T1 tram runs to the Grand Bazaar, Eminönü and across the Galata Bridge. The trade-off is evenings: once the sights close it gets quiet, restaurants lean towards tourist menus and carpet sellers are persistent.

  • Akbıyık Caddesi
