What it's like

The Avenida da Liberdade is Lisbon's answer to the Champs-Élysées: a wide, leafy boulevard with mosaic pavements, garden cafés and designer boutiques, running up to the Marquês de Pombal roundabout and Parque Eduardo VII. Many of the city's best hotels line it or the streets around it.

It's a polished, central base with metro stations along its length and a 10-minute walk to Rossio. It's quieter at night and has less local character than the old quarters.
