What it's like

Cascais was a fishing village turned royal summer resort, and it keeps an upmarket, relaxed feel: small beaches in town, a marina and citadel, the Boca do Inferno cliffs and a promenade to Estoril. Guincho's wild surf beach and Sintra's palaces are a short drive away.

It's ideal for combining Lisbon with the beach, especially in summer. The town beaches are small and crowded in August, and Lisbon is 40 minutes away by train.
