What it's like

Chinatown mixes souvenir streets with real neighbourhood life: the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Sri Mariamman, Singapore's oldest Hindu temple, stand a block apart, and Maxwell and Chinatown Complex hawker centres serve some of the city's most famous dishes. Ann Siang Hill, Club Street and Keong Saik Road have cocktail bars and restaurants.

It's central, on two MRT lines and walking distance from the river and the financial district, and its shophouse hotels give more character for the money than the big towers. Rooms are often small, and some streets are noisy in the evening.

  • Ann Siang Hill & Club Street
