The best things to do in Singapore

Singapore is compact and easy to get around. Marina Bay and the Civic District are the centre, with Chinatown, Kampong Glam and Little India a few MRT stops away, Orchard Road to the west and Sentosa island off the south coast.

Here are the 20 things we'd put on a first trip, grouped by part of the city, with the area to stay in if that part of Singapore matters most to you. Some of the best things, like the light shows and hawker centres, are free or close to it.

Marina Bay

Chinatown

  1. 9.Buddha Tooth Relic TempleFree

    A large Tang-style temple holding a relic said to be the Buddha's tooth, with a rooftop prayer-wheel garden.

    Tip: Cover shoulders and knees; the temple lends shawls at the entrance.

Kampong Glam and Little India

    The golden-domed mosque at the heart of the old Malay quarter, and the narrow lanes of murals, cafés and boutiques around it.

    Tip: The mosque is open to visitors outside prayer times; robes are provided.

FAQs

Is Gardens by the Bay free?

The outdoor gardens and the Supertree Grove are free, including the evening Garden Rhapsody show. You pay for the Cloud Forest and Flower Dome and the Supertree aerial walkway.

Can you use the Marina Bay Sands infinity pool without staying there?

No. The pool is only for hotel guests. Visitors can buy a ticket to the SkyPark observation deck on the same level.

Can you visit Jewel Changi without a flight?

Yes. Jewel is outside the airport's immigration area and open to the public, with direct MRT access to Changi Airport station.
