What it's like

The Civic District is where the British built their city: the Padang, the old Supreme Court and City Hall (now the National Gallery), St Andrew's Cathedral and Raffles Hotel. Fort Canning Park rises behind it. Along the Singapore River, old warehouses at Boat Quay, Clarke Quay and Robertson Quay are now restaurants and bars.

It's a central, walkable base between Marina Bay and Chinatown, with museums by day and riverside drinking at night. Clarke Quay is loud and touristy after dark; Robertson Quay, further upstream, is calmer with good brunch spots.
